The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was poised to be one of three candidates vying for the role of Irish president, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Yet, late Sunday he announced via a statement that he "committed an error inconsistent with his values and the standards he upholds."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to exit the presidential race with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he said in his announcement.
